We currently have a postdoc opening on the project “Computational metagenomic analyses for Fish and food quality and origin assessment.”

The project is about the application of metagenomic and genomic data for the development of tools to evaluate the quality of food, with particular reference to the fish in relation to the accumulation of pollutants (such as: bioplastics, antibiotics and other xenobiotics), and origin focusing on use of data generated by second and third generation sequencers. Given the centrality of the analysis of massively generated sequences, a strong background in computational biology is required on the part of the candidate. The multidisciplinary vocation of the Microbiology laboratory is particularly suitable for projects of this type, also boasting numerous publications and funded projects on similar topics. The candidate will therefore have to deal with the computational biology part related to the carrying out of both projects, working mainly on ad-hoc generated sequences and using clustering and classification algorithms and have a background in biostatistics and Computer sciences.

The position is Fish_eu Trust H2020 Eu-grant.

The position is a one year position that can be renewed up to 3 years.

ONE scholarship funded by Dipartimento di Biologia (DiBio) in the context of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan – NextGenerationEU. Project: National Biodiversity Future Center –NBFC CN5-S01 – CUP C93C22002810006 – Topic: Integrating microbiome with the virome analysis to unveil the unseen biodiversity of the Venice lagoon (curriculum: EVOLUTION, ECOLOGY AND CONSERVATION).

Viruses and prokaryotes are numerically far more abundant than any other living component in seas and oceans and contribute significantly to the ecosystem functioning. As regards the Venice lagoon, a coastal transition system strongly influenced by human activities and climate changes, the available metadata are fragmentary for microbes and almost null for viruses. Focusing on contrasting lagoon sites and selected matrices, metagenomic analyses will be used to identify viral sequences and to complement microbiome data obtained by metabarcoding. Unveiling invisible components of marine biodiversity, this project aims to strengthen the knowledge base for studying ecological interactions in fluctuating biological systems.

Focusing on marine bivalves and microorganisms, this project aims to expand and improve the digitalization of biological signals, from microbiomes and viromes to transcriptomes and metabolomes, to integrate them with data coming from other disciplines leading to maritime, marine and inland water technologies. In fact, the joint modeling of biological and environmental data can ultimately enable timely predictions and effective policy decisions.

The Molecular Genetics laboratory focuses on the investigation of candidate biomarkers to be applied to screening, diagnosis and prognosis of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). Exciting opportunity for a post-doctoral scholarship is open on the PRIN (PROGETTI DI RICERCA DI RILEVANTE INTERESSE NAZIONALE) project “Understanding dyserythropoiesis to identify new therapeutic mechanisms in hereditary anemias”.

The research project will be carried out at the Department of Biotechnology and Biosciences, University of Milano – Bicocca (Italy) in the Human Genetics Laboratory headed by Prof. Antonella Ronchi. The fellowship is for two years.

Our laboratory is interested in studying molecular mechanisms of erythroid cells differentiation during development, focusing on transcriptional control of the differentially expressed globins genes during development. We are using cellular and mouse models, gene editing and state-of-the art approaches to investigate transcription factors-chromatin interactions to functionally characterize key players in dyserythropoiesis in beta-hemoglobinopathies with the final goal of identifying new therapeutic targets.

Education required

• University PhD degree in a relevant discipline, e.g. biomedicine, biology or biochemistry that was obtained within the last 4 years

Qualifications

• Experience with basic laboratory methods in molecular/cell biology and biochemistry and or hematology
• Fluent written and oral communication in English
• High level of motivation and commitment
• Ability to work in a team

Title of the study: Molecular characterization of PNPase pathological variants

The goal of this research is to understand the molecular basis of pathologies due to mutations in the PNPT1 gene. These mutations alter the functionality of PNPase, a mitochondrial protein essential for cell survival and very conserved in evolution.

Role and responsibility:
The candidate will participate in the construction and characterization of human cell lines with mutations in the PNPT1 gene and in the development of in vitro assays for the study of PNPase activity.
