Title of the study: Molecular characterization of PNPase pathological variants

The goal of this research is to understand the molecular basis of pathologies due to mutations in the PNPT1 gene. These mutations alter the functionality of PNPase, a mitochondrial protein essential for cell survival and very conserved in evolution.

Role and responsibility:
The candidate will participate in the construction and characterization of human cell lines with mutations in the PNPT1 gene and in the development of in vitro assays for the study of PNPase activity.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The workshop is designed to enable the attendees to apply metabolomics in a research-based context. We will focus both on experimental design and data analysis of different data sources integrated at the level of the metabolome. Attendees will engage into the design of a mass spectrometry-based metabolomics experiment with cutting-edge equipment and will gain an overview on the use of specific software platforms for metabolomics data mining. Special attention will be paid to the integration of metabolomics data with metagenomics, gene expression and proteomic data.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Research scientists who are using or planning to use metabolomics analysis in their research activities are welcome to attend the workshop.
Participants are invited to present a use case by submitting an abstract (max 150 words) containing a short description of their research topic and the metabolomics issue/approach they wish to discuss with the speakers. The Organizing Committee will select ten abstracts for a flash presentation and discussion during the roundtable on Friday, on 29th April 2022 afternoon.

in 2022 we finally meet for the third edition of the Zebrafish Italian Meeting (ZFIM) organized by the University of Naples Federico II in collaboration with Fondazione Guido Bernardini and AISAL, on 9-10-11 February 2022 in Naples.

The meeting promotes network with all scientists using zebrafish and all other fish for scientific purposes, encourages new collaborations, and gets updated on cutting-edge research in a diverse array of topics.

Oral and poster presentations will be selected from submitted abstracts together with outstanding plenary lectures. A limited number of fellowships/waivers will be offered to junior scientists.

One-week interdisciplinary online course on emerging viral infectious diseases.

This online course includes lectures on SARS-CoV-2, mammalian-borne emerging viruses and arboviruses, coupled with practical sessions on the analysis of genomic and meta-genomic data through state-of-the-art bioinformatic approaches. A session on scientific communication with David Quammen (author of spillover) will conclude the course.

16:00 – Viviane Cordovez – Exploring the diversity and function of plant-associated microbiomes

Viviane Cordovez, Ph.D. is a scientist at the Dept of Microbial Ecology, Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO) in Wageningen. She is interested in exploring the diversity and functions of plant-associated microorganisms and the mechanisms underlying plant-microbe interactions. Currently, together with Danish and American academic partners, she investigates the microorganisms inhabiting the phyllosphere microbiome of wheat for protection against pathogens. She is also involved in collaborative projects between NIOO and USFQ (Ecuador), where they investigate the impact of plant domestication on the microbiomes of wild and modern tomato plants grown in native and agricultural soils.

16:45 – Nicola Segata – Metagenomics of the human microbiome

Nicola Segata, Ph.D., is Professor at the CIBIO Department at the University of Trento (Italy). His lab (http://segatalab.cibio.unitn.it/) comprises more than 20 researchers and employs experimental metagenomic tools and novel computational approaches to study the diversity of the microbiome across conditions and populations and its role in human diseases. The projects in the lab bring together computer scientists, microbiologists, statisticians, and clinicians and are generally focused on profiling microbiomes with strain- level resolution and on the meta-analysis of very large sets of metagenomes with novel computational tools. His work is supported by the European Research Council and by other European agencies.

A postdoctoral position (2 years) is available in the “Human Genome Architecture” laboratory of
Giuliana Giannuzzi (starting date: Fall 2021).

We are seeking qualified and enthusiastic applicants with skills in computational
biology/bioinformatics, ideally also with some experience in laboratory work.

The “Human Genome Architecture” lab has been recently established at the Department of
Biosciences of the University of Milan, one of the “Departments of Excellence” of Italian
Universities. We are interested in the study of complex regions of the human genome that are
hotspots in disease, diversity, and evolution. We analyze genetic data from individuals carrying
pathogenic and/or peculiar structural variants (large genomic alterations >50 bp) and
reconstruct the architecture of these loci and their evolutionary history through comparative
sequence analysis in Primates. We also investigate the consequences of the rearrangements
by genotype-phenotype correlation studies as well as gene expression data analysis. Future
developments will include the assessment of the 3D chromatin organization.

The postdoctoral fellow will study complex regions involved in neurodevelopmental disorders
by using both data produced in the lab and available genomic data.
