Luciano Gaudio is full professor of Genetics and is attending his scientific activity at Dept. of Biology at University of Naples Federico II. His research activity begun with the study of enzimatic polymorphism (6-PGD, PGM) in some species (humans and Drosophila melanogaster) and on the mechanisms of their maintenance. In the past he worked on mutagenesis and genotoxicity using Mouse erythroleukemia cells model and some species of plants. From many years he is focused on the studies of some animal and plant species to contribute at the resolution of systematic, phylogenetic and evolutionary problems, using cladistic approach before with cytogenetic panel and after using molecular markers as RFLP, RAPD, ISSR and SNP and DNA sequence analysis. In particular, among the plant species, the scientific activity was addressed, in the recent past to solve phylogenetic problems in the Dioon genus (Cycadales) and more recently in the Italian species of Orchidaceae with the aim to investigate the molecular evolution of the genes involved in the flower development and the molecular mechanism of flower differentiation in Orchis italica. In the last period the research is focused on the role of miRNA in MADS gene regulation as on the evaluation of biomarkers to reveal the sea water pollution.
